Helping women experiencing poverty strengthens families, boosts economies, promotes social equality, and fosters a healthier, more resilient society overall.
“Together, we can create a brighter tomorrow for the women who need it most. The financial support we receive from Episcopal Impact Fund allows us to meet our clients where they are and address their needs – both large and small.” –Melissa Hellums, Executive Director, Serenity House Oakland / Sister to Sister 2
Serenity House Oakland, also known as Sister to Sister 2, is a vital force in the community, dedicated to empowering women and fostering healing. As a diverse sisterhood, the organization has spent over 15 years transforming the lives of more than 1,000 women who have faced violence, addiction, homelessness, and incarceration. Their mission is rooted in helping women heal from trauma, achieve their dreams, and restore their overall wellness.
Programs Tailored to Women’s Needs
Serenity House offers a comprehensive set of programs designed to address the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the women they serve. These programs are crafted to provide not only immediate relief but also long-term support. Their Substance Abuse Treatment program tackles addiction on multiple levels, aiding women in achieving and maintaining sobriety. The Domestic Violence Recovery initiative empowers survivors of domestic violence, helping them reclaim their lives with a focus on self-sufficiency. A key component of Serenity House's services is Supportive Housing, which offers stable living arrangements for women as they work to rebuild their lives. Additionally, the Re-Entry Support program provides formerly incarcerated women with the essential resources they need to successfully reintegrate into society, offering them a fresh start.
“As a third generation Oakland native, I feel such a profound connection to and gratitude for the women of Serenity House. Their commitment to our sisters in Oakland is a gift to this great but often maligned city.” –Kieran King, Director of Communications and Brand, Episcopal Impact Fund
Vital Services for the Community
In addition to its core recovery and empowerment programs, Serenity House Oakland extends its services to the wider Oakland community through various outreach initiatives. One of these initiatives, the Sharing is Caring Community Outreach, takes place every Monday, during which Serenity House provides approximately 150 meals to unhoused individuals, along with distributing essential items such as clothing, blankets, and hygiene supplies. Another key program, Serenity Safe Haven, launched in 2020, offers immediate support to survivors of domestic violence, providing emergency housing and connections to long-term housing and employment resources. Furthermore, through Monthly Community Health Events, Serenity House partners with Alameda County Health to host health fairs that offer vaccinations, medical screenings, and other vital services to the community.
“Serenity House is creating a lasting impact on individuals, families, and the community as a whole. By standing with Serenity House Oakland, we’re not just supporting an organization—we’re joining a movement for transformation and empowerment.” –Christina Alvarez, Executive Director, Episcopal Impact Fund
