Alameda Point Collaborative transformed vacant military housing on the former Alameda Naval Air Station into a supportive housing community
“The money that we get (from Episcopal Impact Fund) helps us continue this amazing work that we do every single day—changing lives.” –Suzanne Martin, Director of Fund Development & Community Outreach, Alameda Point Collaborative
At Alameda Point Collaborative (APC), the mission is clear – to provide a path out of homelessness through housing and comprehensive support services.
Located on 34 acres at the former Alameda Naval Air Station, APC offers 200 units of housing to over 500 individuals – over half of whom are under the age of 25 and many of whom have faced significant challenges like domestic violence and disability. Beyond foundational housing, APC provides vital case management and counseling to empower residents to achieve stability. Their programs are tailored to create a solid foundation for success, with an impressive record of helping 100% of new residents maintain housing for at least six months, a critical milestone for long-term stability.
Employment and education play a pivotal role in APC’s vision of self-sufficiency. The organization's Resource Center offers personalized assistance in building resumes, job searching, and accessing higher education opportunities. APC’s innovative On-the-Job Training (OJT) program immerses residents in hands-on work experiences through their on-site Farm2Market and Ploughshares Nursery. These programs enhance skill-building while fostering confidence. A dedicated youth OJT initiative extends these benefits to younger participants, creating opportunities for career development and lifelong learning from an early age.
APC also thrives as a community hub, particularly through Farm2Market, a sustainable farm that began as a youth-led project. Farm2Market not only provides fresh, locally grown produce but also connects residents and volunteers through educational workshops, wellness events, and community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares.
The Children and Youth Services programs at Alameda Point Collaborative (APC) are designed to support young residents in overcoming challenges associated with housing instability and to create a vibrant, nurturing community. These services include after-school programs, academic enrichment initiatives, and summer activities. The APC Education Center, for instance, offers engaging literacy programs like I-Ready, which helps students bridge academic gaps caused by past disruptions. Many students participating in these programs have shown remarkable progress, with some achieving two years of reading advancement in one school year. Additionally, the program fosters a sense of ownership and community involvement among children, such as through collaborative projects like creating a library or contributing to the upkeep of community spaces.
All these programs embody APC's mission to blend support with opportunity, cultivating a thriving community where everyone can contribute and grow.
